In rural Guatemala many families cultivate vegetables on small pieces of land, and often the entire family income is derived from this plot. The father
ploughs the field and mother sows and transplants whilst she carries the youngest on her back. The older children weed the same field.
Children from these families regularly fall out of the school system. It was for this reason particularly that Centro Educativo Guatemala “Melanie Beemsterboer”
built a school in Parramos. Teachers and employees of the foundation have been, and continue to be, inspired by the eagerness of the children to learn.
Each education programme takes six months, and there are 2 programmes a year. Every year two different groups of students follow a six month programme, with children
attending school two weeks per month.
General education is combined with learning practical skills in the field. In this way children are given an interesting education that fits their specific circumstances.
They pass the knowledge and experience gained to their family and fellow villagers.
Our teachers interview and select students before entry to the school, and this permits personnal attention for every child. Teachers are then guided by their students needs,
making teaching more effective.
